Quilt Exhibition – Common threads

May 15 at 5:00 pm 7:00 pm

This exhibition is a memorial to Maureen McDonald who died last year, along with an underlying belief that her work was ‘not Art’

The inspiration for Maureen to start quilting came from the annual festival in Braidwood NSW called

‘Airing of the Quilts’ where a large contingent of people hung quilts at every location possible along the main street for one weekend a year. Virginia Postrel in her book The Fabric of Civilization states that ‘The story of textiles is in short the story of humanity – a global story set in every time and space. From paleolithic string, binding stone to handles to the present $5 t-shirt, fabric has dominated human evolution with our need not only to clothe ourselves but to use textiles in every aspect of our lives.

It is no surprise nowadays to see groups forming worldwide making quilts. It is a social collective and forms strong bonds within communities.

A similar group exists in Queenstown.

Quilts are now being recognised as an Art form in their own right and gaining entry as such into major galleries around the world.

Alongside Maureen McDonald’s quilts, one work from each of Denise Cook, Marie Cooper, Deb Robinson and Tania Rinaudo traces the common threads that bind this quilting community.
